This recipe for no-machine grapefruit gelato or ice cream is devine! It’s so simple and very versatile. Just think of all the different fruit flavored gelatos or ice creams you could make! All you have to do is substitute any juice for the grapefruit juice, use any citrus zest, and adjust the amount of sugar accordingly.
We made this for our 90˚F summer, which goes great with this gelato/ice cream! This recipe will definitely be used again and again and again. Try it and comment on your experience below!
2 cups regular (NOT heavy) whipping cream-if you can’t find regular whipping cream like we couldn’t, just mix 1 1/2-1 3/4 cups heavy whipping cream with whole milk or other milk (2%, 1%, fat free, etc.)
1 grapefruit (we recommend ruby red)
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
Zest the grapefruit (making sure not to get the white parts as those are very bitter).
Then half it and juice it, either by hand or with a citrus juicer. You only need 1/4 cup of the grapefruit juice, so the leftovers can be used to make a grapefruit beverage (look at our blog post for citrus beverages).
Get a medium sized bowl and whisk the cream, grapefruit zest, grapefruit juice, sugar, and salt. Then pour the mixture into a container and freeze for at least 8 hours or overnight. Then, serve and enjoy!
